1970's
In the 1970's the conservative party were in power. Their immigration policy was to allow people with work permits and relatives already in the UK, to move into the country. At this point in time there was a high unemployment in the public, in 1972 the figure of unemployment was 1,023,583. This suggests that people looked for an easy way to get money which inevitability resulted in the increase in crime.
2009
In 2009 the labour party was in government and their immigration policy allowed free roaming for people in countries that were part of the European union. The population did increase greatly and this allowed more people to work in the UK, however the unemployment figure in the UK did increase to 2,350,000. Also the crime rate fell by 7% from the following year

1970's
Crime rates : 65% of homicides in london were as a result of gangs, organised crime was high in built up areas such as london and manchester during the 70's.
Immigration: In April 1978 the Tory party announced its intention to introduce a new nationality law, as well as new restrictions on the entry of dependants, husbands and fiancés. They also promised to create a 'register' of dependants specifically from the Indian sub-continent. In the months immediately preceding the election Thatcher repeated her earlier claim that 'British people's fears' about 'being swamped' were legitimate.54 Nearly all of the Tory party's manifesto pledges to further tighten up Britain's system of immigration controls, which by now already ensured that New Commonwealth migration consisted only of the dependants of men who had entered Britain as migrant workers more than a decade earlier, were implemented with great speed.
Unemployment figures: during the 1970's unemployment was at 2.4% of the whole population.
Political situation: In the 1970's the party that was in power were the tories under Margaret Thatcher .
2009
Crime rates: The number of domestic burglaries recorded by police rose by 4%, the number of robberies involving knives leapt by 18%, drug offences were up by 9% and the level of fraud and forgery shot up by 16%.
Immigration: The Government believes that immigration has enriched our culture and strengthened our economy, but that it must be controlled so that people have confidence in the system. We also recognise that to ensure cohesion and protect our public services, we need to introduce a cap on immigration and reduce the number of nonEU immigrants.
We will introduce an annual limit on the number of non-EU economic migrants admitted into the UK to live and work.
We will end the detention of children for immigration purposes.
We will create a dedicated Border Police Force, as part of a refocused Serious Organised Crime Agency, to enhance national security, improve immigration controls and crack down on the trafficking of people, weapons and drugs.
We support E-borders and will reintroduce exit checks.
We will apply transitional controls as a matter of course in the future for all new EU Member States.
We will introduce new measures to minimise abuse of the immigration system, for example via student routes, and will tackle human trafficking as a priority.
We will explore new ways to improve the current asylum system to speed up the processing of applications.

In preparation for the exam students must:
*Engage with a range of theoretical perspectives
*Demonstrate a personal position on the issues
*Exam answers must have a historical, contemporary and future perspective, focussing mostly on the contemporary.
*Emphasise the active audience i.e. how people 'give meaning' to cultural products (media texts).
*Have an understanding of two different areas of the media ie. film, television, internet, magazines, etc
In order to prove that you have a lot of this understanding already you will split into groups to work on answering these 4 prompt questions in detail.
You have 40 minutes to discuss and identify a clip/clips to back up your argument. You must also include reference to contemporary theory.

2. How does contemporary representation compare to previous time periods?
3. What are the social implications of different media representations of groups of people?
4. To what extent is human identity increasingly mediated?

Does it prove or disprove Buckinghams theory? -We believe that Misfits does prove Buckinghams theory to some extent for instance he exaggerates stereotypes and therefore portrays a slightly unrealistic view of teenagers in britain. However the views and humour that the characters have seem to be very true of real teenagers and therefore disproves Buckinghams theory.
